The ProNET-80 system is an 80-Mbps, token-passing ring local-areanetwork. The p1583 VMEbus interface, in combination with the p5204device driver, provides extremely high-performance networking for SPARC-based workstation systems. Features include:

Very-high-speed networking (80 Mbps).
80-Mbps network throughput.
40-Mbps host interface throughput.
Media independence: Twinax or optical fiber.
Optional integrated fiber optics adapters on the p1583 board.
Compatibility with existing TCP/IP software.

The p1583 interface provides a true full-duplex ProNET-80 controller forVMEbus, with dual-ported memory, and an auxiliary DMA controller.
